FAA LAANC – Instant Airspace Authorization
Secure automated airspace authorizations in near–real time—LAANC simplifies drone flights near airports.
What Is LAANC?
LAANC, or Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability, provides a fast, streamlined way for drone pilots to receive FAA-approved flight clearances in controlled airspace—specifically at or below 400 feet. Instead of a lengthy manual approval process, drone pilots can now obtain near-instant permissions to fly through FAA-authorized apps. This system also gives air traffic controllers real-time awareness of planned drone operations.

How LAANC Works

Choose a LAANC
app from an FAA-designated UAS Service Supplier (USS).

Plan your flight
by specifying the time, date, location, and altitude within the app.

Submit your request
the app checks your plan against flight-safe zones using UAS Facility Maps.

Get instant approval
if you’re below the FAA-defined grid ceiling.
Most operations under controlled airspace now require no direct contact with air traffic control, unless explicitly stated in the authorization.

Where Is LAANC Available?
LAANC covers over 726 U.S. airports and controlled airspace facilities. If your planned flight area isn’t LAANC-enabled, you can still apply through FAA’s DroneZone.
Why Use LAANC?
What Is a USS Platform (UAS Service Supplier)?
UAS Service Suppliers (USSs) are FAA-approved third-party companies that act as your interface with the LAANC (UAS Data Exchange) system. While the FAA handles airspace data and authorizations, you interact through the USS platform—typically via a website or mobile app.
These platforms let you:
